SOPHIE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Brief

To transform an ugly internal frosted glass door that separated the porch from the hallway, in a charming seaside apartment on the South Coast of England.

Solution

Sophie Hacker is a renowned stained glass artist, and a member of the British Society of Master Glass Painters. Sophie was invited by Jane to take a look at this problem and commissioned her to bring her creative skills to solve this frosty conundrum, aiming to flood the hallway with light and colour in the process.

Initially, Sophie spent a day with the client taking in the views, capturing the ambience of the residence and determining a colour palette, which Sophie agreed with the owner. The solution was to create a modern glass panel that would give the effect of stained glass, but was much more cost-effective to realize.

The vision was to create an abstract portrayal of the client’s life, leading into a sunny future. At the heart of the illustration were views from the apartment and references to the sea. Sophie sketched out her ideas on paper and painstakingly crafted the colour glass schematic, bringing her skill and artistry to bear, as only an Artist Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass can.

One month later and the design was complete; the luminous sun a representation of the client’s journey forward and her future hopes. Sophie passed her ‘paint by numbers’ sheet to the glassmaker, tasking him with turning bold vision into delicate reality.

On completion, what was once a drab opaque doorway is now a threshold of colour and light. It separates the porch and hallway, while uniting the inner and outer spaces in a reflective manner: mirroring the local nature and the client’s aspirations.
