HOW ART CAN HELP US TO LIVE WELL
Nutrition,Exercise and Art!
We all know that eating sensibly and exercising helps us to be healthier – hopefully living a longer, more active life, but it is becoming more and more apparent that a sense of wellbeing contributes to this.
How many of us can use the words happiness, joy, and contentment, when we are describing our home environments? It is more important than ever to think about this now that so many people are using their home as their workplace too.
How do you want to feel at home? This isn’t a straightforward question as there should be several answers which depend on which room you are thinking about. There are rooms in your home where you need to relax – your bedroom being the key one. In particular, the space opposite your bed should be thought about very carefully. This is the last space you see before going to sleep and the first you see as you wake up – so think calm, peaceful – something that doesn’t kickstart your brain into too much thought. Muted colours are probably best, maybe a peaceful landscape, or a painting of somewhere you have been which when you were there, in the middle of it, made you feel calm and happy. Sleep is such a major part of health and wellbeing – if we can help it by improving our sleeping space why wouldn’t we?
This contemplative painting by Thuidyz is perfect – a static scene – an unusual combination of a figurative painting overlaid with a still life.
Other parts of the house that may need calming with appropriate artwork are the part of your living area where you unwind in the evening and the space where you practice yoga, or mindfulness or meditation. Your dining area probably needs something completely different. It is usually the place for stimulating conversation. This is an opportunity for stronger colours and bolder images – maybe paintings that tell a story, or provoke comment, paintings that you see different details in every time you look at them – artworks that inspire the enquiring brain. In the dining area you are going to need at least two artworks on opposing walls so that everyone around the table has something to look at! You may need your workspace to be energising, stimulating and thought provoking or maybe because your work life is frenetic you may want something to calm the brain.
