JOIN JANE CONTINUING TO MAKE SENSE OF ART

And this month Jane is looking ahead to Summer Exhibitions along the South Coast

Two of my passions are art galleries (and exhibitions) and the sea. This summer there are lots of opportunities to combine them, whether it’s a day out or a few days away. Here are a few of the ones I would like to go to.

Margate is becoming a very arty place to visit and it is now the home of Turner Contemporary. This summer its main exhibition is called ‘The Sunken Boat: A glimpse into past histories.’ This has been inspired by the coastal history of the area and the story of a sunken slave ship. It is a multi media exhibit including painting, sculpture, collage and sound. There are also commissions by renowned artists, including Antony Gormley and Tracey Emin to be found in Margate.

The Towner Eastbourne has an exhibition called ‘Sussex Modernism’ which explores the region of Sussex through modernism, harnessing the landscapes, cultures and history.

Heading west, Pallant House, Chichester has, what promises to be a fascinating exhibition called ‘Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists’. This features 150 portraits of 80 well known artists by other well known artists, including paintings, prints, drawings, photography and sculpture from the last 120 years. You will be able to see portraits by and of the likes of Lucien Freud and David Hockney.

Further along the coast within sight of The Needles is The Russell Cotes Gallery, Bournemouth. Their summer exhibition is ‘May Morris: Art and Advocacy.’. May Morris was the younger daughter of William Morris and the exhibition showcases her designs for embroidery and wallpaper as well as telling the story of her fight for the place of female artists in the early 20th century.

A few hours south west takes us to The Box, Plymouth to their exhibition ‘Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes’. This major exhibition marks 100 years since the beginnings of surrealism when Andre Breton first published the ‘Surrealist Manifesto’. ‘Forbidden Territories’ takes you on a journey through bizarre universes and dreamlike scenes and features artists like Salvador Dali and Max Ernst.

And there are lots more! Far too many to do them all. I hope one or two appeal and you can work them into a day of sea air and art – uplifting and good for the soul!
